Benbrook, Texas
Pioneer Settlement to Mature Suburb
Benbrook is a suburb of Fort Worth, Texas, and is located in the southwestern section of Tarrant County about 11 miles from downtown Fort Worth and is bisected by US Interstate Highway 20 and State Highway 377.
In the early 1800s, the American Indians from the Comanche, Wichita, Caddo, and Lipan Apache tribes along with large herds of buffalo roamed the area that is now known as Benbrook. The tribes were attracted to the area due to a large amount of game and consistent source of water provided by the Clear Fork-Trinity River.
Benbrook is considered one of the oldest communities in Tarrant County that was first settled in 1843 when S. Edward and his wife Nancy Willburn of Missouri were one of the first settlers to arrive and is recorded as the 107th family to participate in the Peters Colony land grant program. The family settled along Mary’s Creek and were responsible for the establishment of the first school and the building of the Methodist Church. Unfortunately, the structures did not endure and reportedly collapsed in 1865. Thus, in 1872 the Chapman, Edwards, Ward, and Willburn families built a new school and church out of lumber. Again, the school did not endure and burned down in the late 1870s. In 1880 the school was again rebuilt and was named the Miranda Academy in honor of Ms. Miranda Snyder who donated five acres of land for the school. During that time the area became known as the Miranda community.
After the Civil War in 1865, James M Benbrook, a native of Indiana, and his family traveled south and finally settled in Miranda in 1876. In that same year, Benbrook, on behalf of the other residents of the community, petitioned and persuaded for Texas & Pacific Railroad to establish their rail line through the community and build a station along Mary’s Creek. The rail line was in 1880 and the new train station was named after Mr. Benbrook who was instrumental in getting the rail line established in the community. Over time, the name of the train station and the community merged and Miranda became known as Benbrook.
In 1868, early Fort Worth rancher, developer, and hotel owner Winfield Scott moved to Tarrant County. He financed the construction of a new two-room brick school building in 1912 and provided an additional teacher for the students. When the first population statistics were reported in the mid-1920s, only 20 persons lived in Benbrook. Over the next 20 years the area remained a small farming and ranching community.
By the onset of World War II the population had increased to about 100 residents and there were 3 stores. In Mid 1947 the US Army Corps of Engineers began the construction of the Benbrook dam which was finally completed in 1950. Also in 1947, Benbrook was officially incorporated as a village.
Between 1950 and 1960 the village of Benbrook entered a period of rapid development and by 1960 the population of Benbrook quadrupled to over 3,200 residents. Over the next 10 years, the growth and development of Benbrook accelerated with the population increasing to 8,100 by 1970. During the next 20 years Benbrook underwent massive change and growth with the population increasing to 13,500 in 1980 and by 1990 the city was home to over 19,500 people. By the year 2000, the period of growth was over and Benbrook was a mature and stable suburban community.
Today, Benbrook is a thriving suburban community that covers 11.07 square miles and is home to over 23,000 people.
