History of Keller, Texas
Farming Settlement to Thriving Suburb
The history of Keller began in the 1840s as one of the Peters Colony settlements that were attracted to the region around Keller because of the availability of water, plentiful game, and the abundance of land for cattle raising and farming. Most of the early settlers that moved to the Keller area were from Missouri and they built their homes near the water source of Big Bear Creek.
In the late 1840s, Samuel Needham sold 640 acres of land to Isaac Roberts. The land sold included the Double Springs settlement and what would later become Keller. In 1875, some of the land owned by Roberts was passed on to A. G. Roberts, who in 1882 sold a right-of-way to the Texas and Pacific Railroad for twenty-five dollars. During that same period, H. W. Black donated forty acres for a new town named Athol. Wanting to lure the railroad to set up a train line and station in their town, the citizens of Athol agreed to rename the town after the Texas Pacific Railroad foreman named Keller. With the arrival of the train and the establishment of the station, the name was changed to Keller.
With the arrival of the railroad, Keller became the trading and commerce center for the surrounding farm community. As part of the growth of Keller electrical service, a telephone system was established in the 1880s. The importance of Keller grew, and in the late 1880s, the post office at Double Springs was shuttered and relocated to Keller with John H. Wallace appointed as the postmaster. The original town streets still bear the names given to them in 1881 including the north-south streets of Elm, Main, and Lamar and the east-west streets of Pecan, Vine, Price, Taylor, Bates, Hill, and Olive.
The growth of Keller was also spurred on by U.S. Highway 377 which connected Fort Worth to Denton. In November of 1955, Keller was officially incorporated. The growth of Keller was greatly enhanced by its proximity to the DFW International Airport complex and the recently created Fort Worth Alliance Airport. By 1990, the population in Keller was approximately 13,000.
Today, Keller is a thriving suburban community that encompasses 18 square miles and has nearly 48,000 residents.
