History of Howe, Texas
A Community of Few, But Now a City of Many
The City of Howe is located less than an hour from the DFW Metroplex and is one of the fast-growing cities in the North Texas area, and the growth is part of the impressive history of the town.
The history of Howe dates back to 1836 – at a time when the first set of settlers arrived in the community following the Texas Revolution. The early settlers in the community were three individuals from Pennsylvania who were a family. They are the couple Jabez and Harriet Hanning and John, Jabez’s brother. The family was part of the Peters Colony settlers who received a land grant upon settling in the area. Seven years after they arrived, the last Indian battle in Grayson County was reportedly fought in Howe.
The major developments in the area started two decades later when a railroad switch was built by the Houston and Texas Central Railway in 1873. The railroad was named the Summit because the positioning was the highest point between the Gulf of Mexico and the Red River. This was also because the railroad switch was 250 meters above sea level.
Businesses soon started to boom in the area with the establishment of a post office. A saloon and a general store were the first set of businesses to be introduced in the area – and they were located at the railroad switch.
Shortly after the railroad was established, the community was renamed Howe, in honor of F.M. Howe, who worked for the Houston and Texas Central Railway. The railroad brought more businesses to the area, including three saloons. A one-room school building (the first in the area) was opened in 1877 and was replaced in 1884 by a two-story building to accommodate the increasing number of students.
The City of Howe was officially incorporated in 1884. The first Mayor was George M. McCrary. A few years after the incorporation, the town started playing host to many agricultural businesses, including a steam gristmill and became a home to the Farmers’ Alliance Cooperative Association.
Other developments that helped boost the economy of the town include barbers, hotels, doctors, newspapers, and several seed companies. Baptist and Methodist Churches were also established at that time.
Like many North Texas towns, the population growth of Howe is impressive. With just three persons occupying the town in 1836, the population of the town has grown from 450 in 1890 to 2,478 in 2000. At the last census conducted in 2019, the population of the town was estimated at 3,346.
Today, the City of Howe is a growing suburb with a moderate tax rate and quality schools that covers 5.1 square miles with a current population of about 3,400 residents.
