What Our Customers Say About Us…

History of Watauga, Texas

Farming Community to Mature Suburb

Watauga is a suburb of Fort Worth in Tarrant County, Texas, and is located 10 miles northwest of Fort Worth on US Highway 377 in northern Tarrant County. Watauga is bordered by Keller to the north, Fort Worth to the west, Haltom City to the southwest, and North Richland Hills to the south.
Shortly after the Civil War, the first settlers arrived, which were primarily farmers and ranchers. The name Watauga was brought by Tennessee settlers who named the community after Cherokee settlements in Tennessee. Watauga is a Cherokee term that means “village of many springs,” and some records indicate that area may have been used by the Cherokee Indians in the early 1800s.

In 1867, a group of settlers came together to establish the Willow Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which was renamed Watauga Presbyterian Church in 1896, and by 1906, the congregation formally joined the Presbyterian Church USA. For the next 50 years, it was the only church in the area and was used by various organizations and other religious communities.

The community of farmers and ranchers grew, and by the 1880s, there was an established community. In 1881, the Texas and Pacific Railway extended its tracks through the community, and by 1883, a train depot and a post office were established. The train brought economic opportunity and the small community entered a period of rapid growth. Over the next 15 years, the area continued to grow, and by 1897, the community had a school with twenty-six students and one teacher.

Unfortunately, the growth and prosperity started to wane in the early 1900s and came to a complete stop when the train depot was closed and moved to the nearby community of Hodge. By 1940, the population had dropped to about 50 residents, with just a few farmers and ranchers living in the area.

The need to produce armaments and war materials during World War II brought great change to Fort Worth, which became a large industrial production center for the war effort. These factories and production facilities created jobs that attracted people from all over the country. The growth and population boom of Fort Worth spilled over into Watauga, which again entered a period of rapid growth. The City of Watauga was officially incorporated in late 1958, and by 1960, the population was reported at approximately 1,000 people.

The period of growth and prosperity continued, and by 1970, the City of Watauga had over 3,700 people. By 1980, the city was home to more than 10,200 residents. The city was not done growing, and by 1990, the population doubled and Watauga was now home to over 20,000 people. Between 1990 and 2010, the period of rapid growth came to an end and Watauga stabilized and concentrated on providing services for its residents.

Today, Watauga is a mature suburb that covers 4.16 square miles and is home to approximately 25,000 people.
