History of Sunnyvale, Texas
A Thriving Suburb of Dallas
Sunnyvale is a suburb of Dallas, Texas in the easternmost portion of Dallas County that is bisected by State Highway 80 and is about 15 miles east of the Dallas central business district.
Just like most of Texas, the area known as Sunnyvale was inhabited by Native American Indian tribes but following European conquests of the Americas, it became open to settlers relocating from the Europe and eastern portion of America. To promote settlement and grow the State of Texas, the area that is now Sunnyvale was originally part of the mid-1800s Peters Colony survey and land grant effort. The current town of Sunnyvale consists of approximately 45 land settler grants issued in the 1840s, the largest of these being the original land grants to J. Johnson, P. Green, M. A. Freeman, and T. D. Coats.
From the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, settlers established 4 communities that were named Hatterville, New Hope, Long Creek, and Tripp, with New Hope being the largest and most prosperous. In 1921, disaster struck when a strong storm tore through the area and destroyed many homes, buildings, and businesses. Over the next 30 years, the communities struggled to rebuild and regain some of their former prosperity. Then in 1953, the 4 struggling communities merged and created the town of Sunnyvale, which was named by the local school children.
By 1960, the town of Sunnyvale had a population of about 1,000 people with several small businesses and an industrial equipment factory. As with almost every town near Dallas, growth accelerated starting in the 1980s which included the small town of Sunnyvale. By 1990, the population of Sunnyvale had more than doubled to over 2,200 people and was home to 6 large employers who provided construction-related services and a drilling equipment manufacturer. Over the next 10 years, growth moderated with the population reaching about 2,700 in the year 2000. The growth accelerated again and by the year 2010, the population exceeded 5,100 people.
Today, Sunnyvale is a thriving suburb that retains much of its rural charm with about 6,800 residents spread out over 16.79 square miles, and although it has suffered from several calamities, some of the town’s historical places survived including the New Hope school, the Tripp first Baptist church, and the Long Creek Cemetery.
