History of Burleson, TX
Train Depot to Thriving Suburb
Burleson, Texas is a suburb of Fort Worth that is about fourteen miles south of the Fort Worth central business district and is located in Johnson and Tarrant counties.
Burleson was started in 1881 when Grenville M. Dodge, who represented the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, bought the land from Reverend Henry C. Renfro that was to be used as a train depot for the rail line built to run between Fort Worth and Hillsboro. As part of the land sale, Reverend Renfro was granted the right to name the new community, which he named Burleson in honor of his former teacher and president of Baylor University, Dr. Rufus Columbus Burleson.
Burleson became an agricultural and livestock farming community and opened the first school in 1879. By the 1880s, Burleson had a post office along with PreAlta Vista College, which later became Red Oak Academy. In 1890, the population was about 200 and the town had several businesses including a druggist, a general store, and a cotton gin-gristmills. Ten years later, the community would add a newspaper named the Burleson Banner, and an artesian well that provided water to area residents and businesses.
Burleson’s population was around 360 in the early 1900s. It dropped to around 250 in the 1920s but rebounded in the 1930s. This was aided by the construction of Highway 21, the arrival of electrical and natural gas service. To aid in the growth of Burleson, the town annexed additional land. From 1940 to 1950, growth was slow and steady but Burleson experienced a growth spurt between 1950 and 1960 with the population tripling in 10 years. During this time, Burleson began the transition from an agricultural economy to one that was based on business and industry.
By 1980, the city’s population was approximately 11,000 and there were over 190 businesses including manufacturers of glass, camper tops, and mobile homes. The growth continued, and by the turn of the century, Burleson’s population was over 20,000.
Today, Burleson is a thriving Fort Worth suburb that encompasses 26 square miles and has over 48,000 residents.
