History of Balch Springs, TX
Bubbling Spring to a Thriving Suburb
Balch Springs is a suburb of Dallas, Texas that is located in Dallas County and is about 15 miles east of downtown Dallas. The city boundaries are Mesquite to the north and east, and Dallas to the south and west.
Early settlements in the area, which will later be known as Balch Springs, started in the 1840s when William H. Bennett and other farmers moved to the area with their families. These early settlers were known to farm oats, wheat, cotton, and corn.
It was in the late 1870s when John M. Balch and his family settled in the area. While farming his land, Balch discovered several natural springs on his land and one, in particular, that seemed to never run dry. Local legend narrates that Mr. Balch cleaned and bricked up the springs which soon enough became a gathering place for families who came to fill their water buckets and engage in conversation. During this time, people began to refer to the area as Balch’s Springs. The name stuck even after Mr. Balch and his family moved away a few years later and it has been known as Balch Springs ever since.
Between the late 1800s through the 1920s, the area remained sparsely populated with farming and cattle ranching as the main economic activity. In the 1930s, the community entered a period of slow growth and received electricity from Texas Power in 1939 followed a short time later with gas and telephone service.
To prevent possible annexation by Dallas, Balch Springs was incorporated in June 1953. The city operates under a local government otherwise known as the “Council-Manager” wherein powers of the city are placed in the City Council. This City Council is tasked to appoint a City Manager who executes the laws and administers the city based on the policies and budget approved by the City Council.
Growth accelerated in the 1950s, and by 1956, the population was reported to be around 3,500 people. The growth and expansion of Balch Springs accelerated with the construction of Interstate 635 in 1959 as well as Interstate 20, and US Highway 175 likewise paved the way for more developments and opened more job opportunities. By 1970, the population in Balch Springs exceeded 10,400 people.
Owing to its proximity to Dallas, the land within Balch Springs became more valuable, and in the 1970s was in high demand by businesses and homeowners. By having properties in Balch Springs, residents and business owners enjoy being close to the city without having to deal with the traffic and congestion.
During the 1970s and 1980s, Balch Springs entered a period of prolonged growth, development, and expansion like most cities in North Texas. The population climbed to 13,700 by 1980, and by 1990, there were over 17,400 people living in the city. Over the next 20 years, the city continued to grow and prosper, and by 2010, the city was home to more than 23,000 people.
Today, Balch Springs is a mature and thriving suburb of Dallas that covers 9.04 square miles with a population that exceeds 25,000 people.
