History of Wylie, Texas
Railroad Town to Bustling Suburb
Wylie is a suburb of Dallas, Texas located off of State Highway 78 Collin County. When it became a community in the early 1870s, it was originally called Nickelville.
The history of Wylie is tied to the era of the steam railroad which began in the 1880s. Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway were building a rail line through the area and started surveying Nickelville and neighboring communities for the best route. The railroad agent in charge of the surveying effort and deciding upon the rail line route was Colonel W.D. Wylie, from Paris, Texas. After the survey was completed, it was decided that the rail line would be located north of Nickelville.
The first Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway train arrived in Wylie in October 1886, and within that year, the residents and businesses of Nickelville moved to be near the railroad depot. The community leaders agreed to name their new community Wylie, in honor of Colonel W. D. Wylie. Shortly after the arrival of the railroad, the post office in Nickelville was closed and reopened in Wylie which was officially incorporated in November 1887.
Less than a year later, the St. Louis Southwestern Railway completed a second rail line that connected Wylie to Greenville. The rich agricultural land and the two rail lines allowed Wylie to prosper and grow. The main produce was cotton, onions, and hogs. Wylie became known as the “Onion Capital of the World,” because of their sweet white onions.
During the Great Depression, it was dairy farming that allowed the town to survive and continue to grow. In 1940, the population of Wylie was over 900 residents and following World War II, the population continued to grow. The growth was further aided by the construction of nearby Lake Lavon with Wylie being selected as headquarters of the North Texas Municipal Water District which provided water services to four counties.
By 1960, the population reached 1,800 and over the next 20 years, the population grew to 3,100 residents and ninety businesses. By 2000, Wylie had spread into Rockwall and Dallas Counties and the population had soared to over 15,000. Today, Wylie is a bustling suburb of Dallas that encompasses 35 square miles with over 53,000 residents.
