History of Rowlett, Texas
Farming Town to Lakeside Suburb
Rowlett, Texas is an eastern suburb of Dallas located in Dallas and Rockwall Counties and covers approximately 22 square miles. It was first settled in the 1840s, and Rowlett was named after Rowlett Creek, which is a tributary that flows into the Trinity River. The creek in turn was named after Daniel Rowlett who moved from Kentucky to Texas in 1835. The town was incorporated in 1952 when its population was 250.
The roots of many Texas towns like Rowlett were the expansion of the railroads and cotton gins. The growth of Rowlett was driven by the extension of the Greenville and Dallas Railroad which reached Rowlett in 1889. At the turn of the century, Rowlett had become a thriving farm community. This growth was further fueled by the Bankhead Highway, the second transcontinental highway in America that extended to Rowlett in 1921. It ran from Washington, DC, to San Diego, California.
The completion of Lake Ray Hubbard reservoir and recreational lake in 1971 made Rowlett a lake-front community that is surrounded on two sides by water. The completion of the lake and the continued population migration made rapid growth inevitable. According to the U.S. Census Bureau statistics, Rowlett is the 8th fastest growing city in the United States with a 5.1% growth rate from July 2017 to July 2018. From a population of 5,100 in 1978, Rowlett has grown to a population of 64,000 citizens and counting.
What was once a small farming community is now a thriving lakeside suburb.
