History of Prosper, Texas
Farming Community to Thriving Suburb
The Town of Prosper is a suburb of Dallas, Texas in central Collin County near State Highway 289. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1846 and found the rich Blackland Prairie soil was good for farming. The early settlers included the M. C. Talkington, Jeremiah Horn, George T. Parvin, and Reverend McElhannon families.
In 1876, the County Court issued an order that large tracts of county land be divided into smaller 160-acre tracts and sold. One of these 160-acre tracts was purchased by Dr. Bryant and was used to establish the community of Richland. A short distance away the community of Rock Hill was formed.
For the next 25 years, the two farming communities coexisted but that changed with the arrival of the railroad. In 1902, the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad built a rail line between Sherman and Dallas with a stop in the area of Richland. As was common during the era of the railroads, small communities near the newly established train stop were abandoned or relocated to be near the train station, which is what happened with Rock Hill. The two communities became one and were renamed Prosper by the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad.
The Town of Prosper was formally incorporated in 1914 with a population of approximately 500. The area continued to serve as a farm-to-market center for the local farmers whose primary crops were cotton and corn. The prosperity ended with the arrival of the Great Depression and the population dropped to below 300 by 1940 and did not rise above 500 until the 1970s. Prosper remained a small farming community with the population slowly rising to over 1,000 in the early 1990s. The population explosion of Dallas and Collin Counties starting in the 1990s included Prosper, and by the year 2000, the population of Prosper had doubled to over 2,000 residents.
Today, Prosper is a thriving and fast-growing suburb with a land area of approximately 23 square miles and a population near 25,000 and rising.
