Cattle Ranch to Rural Suburb
Rhome is a small rural suburb of Fort Worth, Texas located near the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and 81, about 20 miles north of Fort Worth in southeastern Wise County.
The area that is now known as Rhome was first established in the 1850s by settlers from Missouri. Back then, the community was named Prairie Point and it was strategically located at the juncture of two stagecoach routes. One of the settlers from Missouri was Samuel Sheets who owned a large tract of land at the stagecoach junction and in 1858 had the land surveyed and subdivided into lots. Many of the lots were sold and in a few years the small community of Prairie Point had a hotel, school, post office, and several businesses.
Unfortunately, events during the Civil War brought misfortune to the small community. With most of the able-bodied men off fighting in the war, the community was left vulnerable to attack by Indians and bandits. On top of the constant threat of raids, in 1862 five high profile residents of Prairie Point were caught up in the purported Peace Party Conspiracy which resulted in their arrest, hasty conviction, and hanging. These five men were among the forty men that were unfairly tried and hung in what has become known as the Great Hanging in Gainesville. As a result, the small community of Prairie Point was devastated and mostly abandoned.
Over the next 14 years, the small community of Prairie Point existed with little activity or growth. That quickly changed when Byron Crandall Rhome and his wife Ella Elizabeth in 1876 relocated to the area of Prairie Point. Byron was a former officer serving in the Confederate Army under General Walker and participated in numerous battles in Arkansas and Louisiana.
Byron was quite the character and successful rancher. He is known as being one of the first Texas ranchers that was successful in keeping a Hereford bull alive for longer than a few weeks in the harsh Texas ranch lands and his ranch became known as Hereford Park. He was regarded as one of the best Hereford Bull ranchers and his prize bull named Harkaway, was the first Hereford Bull to be declared the winner of the Grand Champion Blue Ribbon cattle show at the Texas State Fair in 1880.
In the early 1880s, Byron successfully negotiated with the Fort Worth-Denver Railroad to build a rail line through the community and establish a new station. With the arrival of the rail line in 1882, the town was renamed Rhome and in 1883 the Rhome post office was established. As with most Texas towns of that era, the railroad brought business and economic growth and by 1890 Rhome had around 170 residents with numerous businesses and two flour mills.
Between 1890 and 1940 the town of Rhome remained a farming and ranching community with a few hundred residents. That started to change in 1939 when US Highway 81 was built and provided easy access to Fort Worth. In 1942 Rhome was officially incorporated and over the next 45 years, the population hovered around 500 residents. By the early 1990s, Rhome had started to become a bedroom community for workers commuting to Fort Worth with a population of about 600. The growth of Rhome faltered for the next 20 years but that changed in 2000 and by 2010 the population of Rhome more than doubled to over 1,500 residents.
Today, Rhome is a thriving rural suburb of Fort Worth that covers a total area of 4.7 square miles and has a population of over 1,800 residents.
