What Our Customers Say About Us…
History of Highland Village, Texas
Farming Community to Affluent Lakeside Suburb
Highland Village is an affluent neighborhood in Denton County, Texas, and a Dallas suburb that hugs the south side of Lewisville Lake’s far western branch. Highland Village is about ten miles southeast of Denton and 20 miles northwest of Dallas and is situated near Interstate 35E and Farm Road 407.
During the 1850s, the first settlers arrived in what is now Highland Village. The migrants traveled to the area via the Old Wagon Trail, a popular trail that was established by settlers heading west. The region at the time had fertile, flat land that was suitable for farming and cattle ranching. In addition, there was an abundance of hilly, wooded areas that were ideal for fishing and hunting. During the early 1900s, the majority of the crops at that time were sugar cane, cotton, and corn. The area also supported a large number of ranchers and dairy farmers who sold the raw milk to dairy processing facilities in Denton. The area continued to be dominated by farming and ranching through the 1930s, but that started to change in 1939 when the community received electricity from the Rural Electric Association.
Two major events affected the community. The first one was the construction of the Lewisville Lake dam constructed in 1957 that created Lewisville Lake. Almost overnight, the small farming and ranching community became a lakeside community. This attracted newcomers who relocated from Dallas. They were attracted by the open land, hills, and lakeside living. The community began to grow, and in 1963, it was officially incorporated as Highland Village and the local farmer and large landowner, Robert Duvall, was the first mayor. Highland Village began to expand along the shores of Lake Lewisville as the years went by.
The second event that helped transform Highland Village was the opening of the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in 1973 and the highway systems connecting the airport to Highland Village and the surrounding area. This ushered in additional growth and opportunity, and between 1970 and 1980, the population of Highland Village increased from about 500 to over 3,200 people. This accelerated growth continued, and by 1990, the population more than doubled to over 7,000 residents. Over the next 10 years, the explosive growth continued and by the year 2000, the population almost doubled again to over 12,100 residents.
To expand economic opportunity and help create some retail development, in the early 2000s, the city joined the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA). This is a program promoted by Denton County to bring additional transportation options to participating communities. The program includes rideshares, senior transportation services as well as mass transit buses and trains connecting Denton County communities to the employment and services available in Dallas and Denton.
Today, Highland Village is a mature lakeside suburb of Dallas that covers a total of 6.51 square miles and provides a high standard of living to the 16,800 people living in the city.
