History of Talty, Texas
Irish Ridge to City of Talty
Talty is a small suburb of Dallas, Texas located in Kaufman County that is bisected by US Highway 20 and Farm to Market Road 1641 in northwestern Kaufman County. Talty is 6 miles to the northwest of Forney, about 9 miles south of Kaufman, 11 miles west of Terrell, and about 25 miles from downtown Dallas.
The area now known as Talty was first settled by Irish Catholics who wished to establish an Irish enclave. The first of the Irish settlers were Tom, Martin Layden, Edmund Daniel Vaughan, and William O’Connor. In the early days, the community was known as Layden’s Ridge but shortly thereafter was renamed, Irish Ridge. In early 1874 the town was again renamed Talty and was formally established with the filing of deeds. The town grew slowly and by the late 1800s, the town had a few businesses which included a general store, a grocer, a gristmill, and a drug store.
To promote the establishment of a Catholic Church, Martin Layden donated a parcel of land to the community. The community came together to build the St. Martin’s Catholic Church which was completed in 1891. A school to educate the local children was built and opened in the same year. The Talty post office was officially established in 1899 but in 1901 it was closed with mail being sent to larger nearby communities.
To attract Catholic Nuns to the community, a convent was constructed and the Sisters of Notre Dame established a convent and later a Catholic school was constructed and operated by the Sisters of Notre Dame. In 1924 a devastating fire destroyed the convent and school which was not rebuilt.
Between the 1900s to mid-1930s, Talty remained a small farming community of fewer than 20 residents and two operating businesses. The small town began to change and grow in the 1950s and 1960s and by 1970 the town was home to over 150 residents and three businesses. Over the next 20 years, the town stagnated and the population dwindled to approximately 30 people.
In the 1990s the town again entered a period of growth and in 1999 was officially registered as a general law city. In the early 2000s, the small community had begun to blossom with a population of over 1,000 people. The period of accelerated growth continued and by 2010 Talty was home to over 1,500 people and numerous businesses. To meet the needs of their growing population the City of Talty was officially incorporated in 2015.
Today, the City of Talty covers 3.39 square miles and is a rapidly growing suburb with a municipal court, a police department, an administrative department, Planning and Zoning Commission, schools, churches and has over 3,000 people who call Talty home.
