History of The Colony, Texas
Farming Settlement to Lakeside Suburb
In the 1840s, the area that is now The Colony was promoted to settlers with a promise of free land. Peters Colony, who was originally from Kentucky, was contracted by the Republic of Texas to survey 16,400 square miles of North Texas land and promote the area to potential settlers who upon settling in the area would be given 640 acres of land. To fulfill the task, Peters created the Peters Land Grant Company. From 1841 to 1848, he recruited 2,200 families to settle in North Texas. These settlers became known as the Peters Colonists.
In 1843, John and Mildred Bridges and their sons, William and David, were one of the first families to settle in the area and established the Bridges Settlement. In 1844, Willis Stewart, who was the principal investor in the Peters Land Grant Company, opened the company’s headquarters and general store at the Bridges Settlement. This became the first stop for settlers who were moving to the area. Henry O. Hedgcoxe was hired to be the chief surveyor and manage the office. Hedgcoxe was considered a good manager but was not liked by the local landowners who did not trust the surveys he prepared. This ultimately led to a group of disgruntled land speculators raiding and burning down the company’s office in July of 1852. This event is now remembered as the Hedgcoxe War.
The area was largely used for cattle ranches and farming. With the arrival of the railroad in 1902, the land use moved away from cattle ranching to cotton farming. During the ensuing year, the area was positively impacted by the construction of the Lake Lewisville dam in the 1950s and the establishment of the Eastvale community in 1960, which would later consolidate with The Colony.
The area was not formally named The Colony until 1973, when the local home builder, Fox and Jacobs, purchased approximately 3,000 acres to create a large residential home development. They named the development The Colony because they wanted to create a sense of kinship with the area’s early history. Development ensued and the first families moved into their homes in late 1974, and by 1977, the area had over 5,000 residents. The Colony continued to grow, and in January of 1977, it voted to formally become an incorporated city.
The Colony is now a beautiful lakeside community with around 40,000 residents.
