History of Forest Hill, Texas

Farming Community to a Mature Suburb

Forest Hill is a small suburb of Fort Worth, Texas, located in south-central Tarrant County and is about eight miles southeast of the Fort Worth central business district at the junction of Interstate 20/820 and State Highway 496.

Like most of North Texas, the area that is now Forest Hill was part of the migration to the west when Texas became a republic and then a state. The first settlers who arrived in the 1860s were mostly farmers and ranchers that were enticed by open lands, good soil, forests for lumber, and an abundance of clean water. The community was originally named Brambleton Station but was later changed to Forest Hill Village.

In 1896, the first school was established that was attended by a little over 100 students. The high number of students indicates that many of the students were from the surrounding communities. By 1905, a second school was established and the number of students attending the schools exceeded 200 and there were 4 teachers.

In the early 1900s, the community had only two streets, Old Mansfield Road and Forest Hill Drive. In 1911, transportation was greatly improved with the arrival of the Fort Worth Southern Traction Company’s electric interurban rail line that ran between Fort Worth and Cleburne. This electric rail line shuttled passengers and some cargo between Fort Worth and Cleburne daily and Forest Hill Village was established as an official stop on the route.

In 1910, the population of Forest Hill Village was small but growing with a need for a reliable source of water, so in 1912, the community drilled a “crooked hole well.” This was the region’s first city-sponsored water system and remained in use for the next 30 years. In the 1940s, the area was still a small farming community with a population of about 90 people.

The community started to change in the mid-1940s when Trentman Company and the Johnson Campbell Company started constructing residential houses and establishing residential neighborhoods. As part of this growth, in 1946 Forest Hill Village was officially incorporated and George Wright became the first mayor. The population increased to 500 people in 1949 at which time the Village filed to be reincorporated as the City of Forest Hill. The growth of the city continued, and by the mid-1950s, the city had over 1,500 residents.

To accommodate the continued growth and to provide for the needs of the citizens, in 1955, the city established plans for the creation of a public water and sewer system. To finance the improvements, the city sold municipal bonds and proceeded with the construction of city water and sewer systems which were completed a few years later. This led to further growth, and by 1960, the population of Forest Hill exceeded 3,200 people, and by 1970, it had more than doubled to 8,200 residents.

The growth of the city continued and was accelerated when in the 1970s the Forest Hill Home Rule Charter was approved giving the City the power to annex adjoining land. Over the next 10 years, the city continued on the path of accelerated growth, and by 1980, the population of Forest Hill exceeded 11,600 people. The city was now a mature suburb and the period of accelerated growth came to an end. By 1990, the population decreased slightly to about 11,400 people. Over the next 10 years, the city entered a period of slow growth, and by the year 2000, the population had reached 12,900 residents. This was followed by another 10 years of a slight population decline, and by 2010, the population was about 12,300 people.

Today, Forest Hill is a stable and mature suburb of Fort Worth that covers 4.17 square miles with a population of about 13,000 residents.
