What Our Customers Say About Us…
History of Copeville, Texas
Farming Community to Growing Suburb
Copeville is an unincorporated far northeastern suburb of Dallas, Texas that is located along State Highway 78 in Collin County near the shores of Lavon Lake.
Among the early settlers who arrived in 1848 and settled in the area that is now called Copeville were the family of Mason W. Cope, which included his wife, Anna McCoy Cope, and their two sons, John Miles and James. The area was originally known as Black Spot, but John Miles quickly became the community leader, and with the help of his father and younger brother, they established a community.
As the community began to grow and prosper, John Miles engaged the services of Thomas King to survey and create a townsite which became known as Copeville, in honor of the community leader John Miles Cope. In 1878, the community was granted a post office and John Miles was named the first postmaster. Other early settlers included Robert and John Patterson, Mrs. Graves and her six sons, Captain J. K. Bumpass, William Duress, and J. Ben Seay. G. W. Pool, a native from Nevada, built the town’s first general store in 1881 which was followed by the establishment of a flour mill and a cotton gin built by J. Goodwin. By the mid-1880s, the community had a church, a school, a cotton gin, sawmill, flour mill, and a general store.
In 1886, local merchant James E. Jones gave the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway land for its rail line and train depot, and shortly thereafter, he opened the first general store. This newly created rail line and the townsite were 1 mile east of Copeville. Realizing the economic benefits of the rail line, the people of Copeville moved their homes and businesses to the new townsite including the post office. The new community assumed the name of Copeville and over the next 20 years, Copeville became the regional transportation and business hub. During this time, it also became a major supplier of the bois d’arc timber that was used for fencing, structural timbers, and as an experiment material used to pave streets in Dallas.
The railroad brought prosperity, and by 1915, the community had about 300 residents including numerous businesses, churches, and a school. Over the next 10 years, the community entered a period of stagnation and slow decline, and by the mid-1920s, the population had declined below 250 people. The Great Depression caused the community to decline further, and by the mid-1940s, the population had dropped below 150 people.
The small community continued to stagnate and remained a small farming and ranching community with a handful of businesses, two churches, and a school. Little changed over the years, and by 1990, the Copeville community had a population of slightly over 100 residents. Over the next 10 years, the population of Copeville remained the same, but that began to change in the early 2000s when the community entered a period of accelerated growth, and by 2010, there were an estimated 2,200 residents.
Today, Copeville remains a rural unincorporated community that is in a period of accelerated growth with an estimated 3,700 people who have made the community their home.
