History of Roanoke, Texas
Railroad Town to Thriving Suburb
Roanoke is a suburb of both Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas that is bisected by U.S. Highway 377 and State Highway 114 in south-central Denton County with a small portion extending into Tarrant County.
The area that is now known as Roanoke, Texas was originally used by American Indian tribes for hunting and foraging for food. This started to change in 1847 when 20 families from Missouri settled on the original land grant given to Travis Wright. The leader of the settlers was Charles and Louis Medlin and the area became known as the Medlin Settlement. Unfortunately, the site for the settlement at the confluence Denton and Henrietta creeks proved to be a poor choice as the area periodically flooded endangering the settlers and their livestock. After enduring numerous floods, in 1879, the community was relocated to higher ground and renamed Garden Valley.
In 1880, the Texas and Pacific Railroad purchased land a few miles from Garden Valley for the development of a town center and the extension of their rail line through the area. The railroad had the town platted and the rail line was completed in 1881. The new town was named Roanoke by the railroad surveyor, in memory of his hometown in Virginia.
The arrival of the railroad brought economic opportunity and growth, attracting settlers from the surrounding area. By 1882, most of the residents in the nearby communities of Elizabeth and Garden Valley relocated to Roanoke at which time the first Roanoke post office was established with Gus Wiggs as the postmaster. Roanoke quickly became the economic and transportation hub for local farmers and cattle ranchers. By the early 1890s, Roanoke had a population of about 350 people with churches, a school, a cotton gin, several groceries, a saloon, and a hotel.
The community of Roanoke continued to grow and prosper, and by the early 1900s, the community had a weekly newspaper, a bank, a grain elevator, and the Denton Oil and Gas Company was established. Additional businesses and buildings were built between 1905 and 1910 including the Masonic Lodge. As was typical during that time, a fire was a constant threat, and in 1910, a devastating fire damaged many buildings on the west side of the community. The buildings were rebuilt and over the next 20 years, the community stabilized with very little growth.
In 1933 during the Great Depression, the City of Roanoke was officially incorporated with H. W. Jenkins as the first mayor. In 1940, the city had a population of about 480 residents and 32 businesses which included 2 manufacturing firms. Over the next 40 years, the population increased slowly but the city continued to progress with a dial telephone system installed in 1948 by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, and natural gas and central sewer lines were installed in the 1950s.
By 1980, the population of Roanoke was approximately 900 people but the growth of the Dallas Fort Worth area was beginning to explode, including in Roanoke. By 1990, the population had almost doubled to over 1600 residents. The massive growth continued, and by the year 2000, the population was over 2,800 people. Over the next 10 years, more businesses and people were attracted to the area, and by 2010, the population doubled to over 5,900.
Today, Roanoke is a thriving suburb that covers a total area of 6.96 square miles with a population of about 9,400 residents who enjoy modern conveniences in a city with a rich history.
