History of Lavon, Texas

Farming Community to Rural Suburb

The City of Lavon is a suburb of Dallas, Texas located in the southeastern part of Collin County that is bisected by Texas State Highway 78. It is about 35 miles northeast of Downtown Dallas.

The area that is now Lavon is part of the fertile farming land known as the Blackland Prairie. The rich soil and the abundance of clean water from Bear Creek attracted settlers to the area in the 1850s. One of the first to settle in the area was John Abston and his family. Abston was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and his military service included participation in the Battle of King’s Mountain.

Over the next 30 plus years, the area was primarily used for farming, cattle ranching and experienced very little growth. This changed in 1888 with the arrival of the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway and the establishment of a train station in the community that was operated as a “Flag Stop.” That same year, the first post office was established with E. C. Thompson as the postmaster. A short time later, the community was formally named Lavon, in honor of Thompson’s son named Lavon Bud Thompson.

The access to a train station turned the once small farming community of about 25 people into a commercial and economic center for area farmers and ranchers. This attracted more people, businesses, and farmers, and by 1910, the population of Lavon increased to approximately 300 people. The small town of Lavon remained a farming and ranching community with the population stabilizing at around 200 residents from the 1920s through the early 1950s and had about 5 businesses that provided service to the area residents.

As a result of the Great Depression, there was a multitude of government programs and organizations created and the Collin County Soil Conservation District was one such organization. The organization was tasked with creating plans for stormwater management, the creation of water reservoirs, and flood control. One of the projects they supported was the creation of Lake Lavon, which was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between 1952 and 1953. The Lake brought fishermen, boats, and recreational visitors to the area but did little to change the population or increase economic activity.

When the City of Lavon was formally incorporated in 1980, there was only one business still operating with a little over 300 residents living in the newly formed city. Over the next 10 years, the population and business environment of Lavon stagnated. As the Dallas area population started to explode in the late 1900s, the growth started to be seen and felt in the suburbs, like Lavon. From the early 1990s to 2000, the population of Lavon increased to almost 400 residents. Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Lavon increased dramatically, and by 2010, the population exceeded 2,200 residents. The once sleepy rural farming community was quickly changing into a suburban bedroom community.

Today, Lavon is a thriving and growing suburban community that covers 3.05 square miles with a population that exceeds 3,700 people.
