History of Hickory Creek, Texas
Thriving Lakeside Suburb
Hickory Creek, Texas is a Dallas suburban town in Denton County that is on the shores of Lake Lewisville and bisected by US Highway 35E. It is one of the few towns in North Texas that was created and developed in the mid-1900s.
The development of the town started in 1960, and it was named after the nearby creek. It rises in northwestern Denton County from where it extends to the southeastern part for fourteen miles to get to the mouth of Lake Lewisville. Over the years, it has grown to become a thriving lakeside community with a robust business and commercial district.
Hickory Creek was named after one of the three forks bordering the town. The first two are called the North and South Hickory Creeks, and they converge to form the mainstream in the town. This convergence also drains the stream to some 123,000 acres and skirts the Denton Municipal Airport. The third fork is called the Dry Fork of Hickory Creek. This creek runs through the Denton Municipal Airport before joining the mainstream a half-mile in the southern part of the boundary in the airport.
The major developments in the town started with the building of residential houses. At the time, subdivisions of Glenview, Shore Heaven, and Lakeview were included in the residential developments in the town. Today, more residential developments are still on course as part of the City Council’s commitment to creating a thriving community for people to live in peace and harmony. The latest residential developments include Waterview, The Enclave of Hickory Creek, Steeplechase North, and South, as well as The Mansions at Hickory Creek.
Commercial developments are not left out, as the development of commercial properties also helped the town to maintain one of the lowest property tax rates in the whole of the Lake Cities area. Top on the list of the commercial developments in Hickory Creek is Sherwin Williams, Carmike Theater, Sports Clips, and Wal-Mart. Restaurants like Wok To You, McDonald’s, Genti’s Italian Restaurant, and Subway are also on the list.
The population of the town was estimated at 219 in 1963 (when the town was incorporated), and it remained that way throughout the 1970s. It was in the year 1980 that the population of the town had a dramatic increase up to 1,422 people. By the year 2000, the population was estimated at 2,078. The figure later rose to about 3,247 in 2010, a sharp 56.3% increase from the previous estimate of 2000.
Hickory Creek is currently run by a Mayor and a City Council. The town also has a fully developed police and fire department that serves and protects the community. The commercial and retail sectors of the town are being enhanced by the expansion of US Highway I-35E, FM 2181, and the development of the DCTA Light Rail Commuter Lien and the Lake Lewisville Toll Bridge.
Today, Hickory Creek is a thriving suburb that covers 4.78 square miles with a population of about 4,800 people. It is a tranquil community that provides a lakeside lifestyle with easy access to big-city services in Dallas.
