History of Heath, Texas

Pastoral Farms to Lakeside Suburb

Heath is a tranquil lakeside suburb of Dallas, Texas on the eastern shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. But, the city wasn’t this way many decades ago.

The history of this Texas City dates back to 1846 when the first settler named John O. Heath came along. So, it is clear where the name of this city was derived from – Heath’s name.

The City of Heath is located on Farm to Market Road 740, seven miles south of Rockwall in the southwestern part of Rockwall County. At the same time, a small portion of the city extends to the south into Kaufman County.

Worthy of mention is that before the area was changed to Heath, it was formerly called Black Hill, a name that aptly captures the dominance of black soil in the community.

The early development was the establishment of a post office in 1849, which is also the first post office to be located in what is now known as Rockwall County. The establishment of the post office was closely followed by the presence of 5 active businesses in 1892.

Heath went through different name changes, with the most popular being the naming of the area as Willow Springs – named after the local stream in the community. After that, in 1886, the area was called Heath, and that became its name until November 4, 2008, when a proposition was made to rename the area from City of Heath to Village of Heath. A majority of the voters (58.9%) voted against the name change. So, the name the City of Heath was retained.

The early population of the city was around 75 in 1892. This number grew to 225 in 1904. By 1936 after the Great Depression, the population reduced to 150 because a majority of the residents had to relocate to seek greener pasture during the depressing periods. The population later grew in the coming years because of innovations and businesses in the area. The population estimate was 175 in 1960, 449 in 1970, and about 1,647 in 1988. The population later grew to 2,108 in 1990 and was estimated at 4,149 residents in the year 2000.

Some of the major events during the developmental years of the city were the establishment of a one-room school in 1898 for 56 students and the establishment of the Heath Independent School District. Things took a sad turn in 1916 following the fire incident that destroyed several existing buildings, leaving just five businesses functional at the end of the Great Depression. The local school was closed, and it was merged with that of Rockwall. At the time, only 50 students were studying at the school.

The City of Heath was incorporated in 1959 with Richard Hoback as the first Mayor. The incorporation brought about more developmental strides for the city, including the development of Lake Ray Hubbard on the western side of the city which transformed the city into a lakeside community. Much like most North Texas towns, the city saw continued growth between 1990 and 2010 when the population reached over 6,900 residents.

Today, the City of Heath is a suburban lakeside community with a rural feel that covers 12.25 square miles and has a population of over 6,900 residents, and growing.
